Justice & Peace Activities  2005

It seems that this year Fairtrade, Make Poverty History and Trade Justice have started to capture the public imagination and the Pinner Association of Churches has not been slow in pointing the way!

It is good to report that all the Churches in Pinner now have `Fairtrade Status’ and the PAC have passed a resolution supporting the Fairtrade ideal. Extending this Status to the whole of `Pinner Village’ is now moving on apace.

The larger campaign to convert the London Borough of Harrow to a `Fairtrade Borough’ received an enormous boost with the recent, almost unanimous, passing of the council resolution in support. Every Councillor was canvassed for their support prior to the meeting!

News of the resolution plus a report on our participation in the November 3rd Mass Lobby of MP’s were well reported in the local press. All of which helps to increase the public awareness.

To recap on our other activities this year, the PAC has been represented in the  Make Poverty History rally in Trafalgar Square, with Nelson Mandela and Bob Geldof; in the all night vigil at Westminster and the ‘Sunrise March’ through Whitehall; the event in Brighton and the G8 rally in Edinburgh in July. Mass signings of `Vote for Trade Justice’ were encouraged outside Sainsbury’s on two occasions and within the Churches. A Fairtrade stall was organised at the Summer Fun Day this year.

Make Poverty History and Fair Trade was the focus of both the summer window display and the June issue of The PAC Clarion.

In the coming year we are looking to maintain and increase our momentum towards our joint goals of Pinner Village Fairtrade Status and London Borough of Harrow Fairtrade Status.
